Based at the urban oasis of Brockwell Lido in Brixton, ASY is a collective of yoga teachers providing classes throughout the week, suitable for all levels.
Brockwell Lido’s airy, spacious yoga studio looks out onto the lido itself, a 50 metre pool, built in the1930s. Beyond the water and the Art Deco building, Brockwell Park’s magnificent trees reach up into the sky.
ASY teachers are all highly skilled and experienced, with their own unique approaches. Their common aim is to ensure everyone has the chance to experience the benefits yoga can bring, by providing safe, accessible classes to all levels, in a beautiful setting.
Amrita, a Sanskrit word, is similar in meaning to the Greek word 'ambrosia': a sweet drink, or nectar, of the gods, which confers on them their immortality. Amrita teachers see yoga as a sweet and pleasurable activity, conferring health, vitality and serenity to all practitioners.
There are challenging classes for those who want to improve strength and fitness, therapeutic classes for those maybe recovering from injuries, or just needing to take things gently, as well as pregnancy classes, mums and babies’ classes and sessions for children.
Please see the timetable here, and check out teachers’ individual approaches here.
History of the ASY
Brockwell Lido has been home to yoga since 1996, the year young Brixton entrepreneurs Paddy Castledine and Casey McGlue re-opened the pool, which had closed in 1990. Casey’s flatmate Nigel Gilderson had just returned from yoga training in India, and decided to start teaching in the disused rooms of the old building. Within a few months the classes were well established, and Nigel invited other teachers to join him. Nigel eventually founded ASY, and runs a teacher training programme each year.
In 2004 Fusion Lifestyle took over the management of Brockwell Lido in partnership with Lambeth Council. Fusion has modernised the lido, and built a gym and spa, but has always been committed to retaining the venue's original character, and its place at the heart of the Brixton community. With this in mind, an agreement was made whereby ASY teachers would continue to teach in the Lido, independently of the Fusion gym programme.
You don’t have to be a member of the Brockwell Lido gym to attend ASY classes (though gym members are welcome, of course). Prices range from £9 to £12, depending on the length of the class, and there are some concessionary rates.
